How to spot a dodgy tradie
Whoever you use, these simple tips can help keep you safe.
Be wary of door-knockers
Someone who turns up unannounced saying your roof or driveway needs urgent work is a common warning sign. You don’t have to decide on the spot.
Get it in writing
Ask for a written quote that says what will be done and what it will cost before any work starts.
Don’t pay it all upfront
A small deposit can be normal. Paying the full amount before the job is done is risky.
Take your time
A good tradie won’t rush you. If you feel pushed, it’s fine to say no and ask someone else.

Does it cost anything to use Safe As Houses?
No. It’s free for homeowners. You only pay the tradie for work you agree to.
So how do you make money?
Tradies pay us a small fee when we pass on a job enquiry. That fee doesn’t get added to your quote.
Do I have to go ahead with the quote?
Not at all. You can take your time, ask questions, get another quote or say no thanks.
Which areas do you cover?
We’re starting with selected areas of Melbourne. Not sure if we cover your area? Send a request and we’ll let you know.
Can I arrange a tradie for my parent?
Yes. Tick the family member box on the form and let us know who the tradie should contact.
What if I’m not happy with the work?
Talk to the tradie first, then let us know. We follow up on every complaint and remove tradies who don’t meet our standards.
